This wasn't how things were supposed to end for Del City.
The Eagles, loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and with a promising start to the season were supposed to finish with their first playoff berth since 2000.
Instead, Del City's season ended Thursday night in Putnam City Stadium with a 34-7 loss to Putnam North.
The win instead sent the Panthers — and Lawton — into the playoffs while the Eagles stay home.
Thursday night, Del City was done in by turnovers and a lack of consistent punch offensively.
Del City junior quarterback Chazten Gonzalez threw six interceptions as Del City turned the ball over seven times.
What had been Del City's strength this season — its passing game — wound up costing it in the end.
After the game, Eagles players were clearly disappointed as Putnam North celebrated its playoff berth on its home field.
Del City coach Nick Warehime immediately tried to pick his team up, while still acknowledging the disappointment at a season ending unexpectedly.
"I couldn't be more proud of them," Warehime said after addressing his team. "I wish we could've played better and I wish it could've ended differently but that's life."
The Eagles end the season 7-3. But in losing their final two games — last week against Mustang and Thursday against Putnam North — the Eagles finished short of the postseason.
Del City had chances early to get in control but just missed out on several chances.
Gonzalez's throw to junior receiver Marquis Walters in the end zone early in the game wound up just out of Walters' reach. A catch there would've put Del City ahead early in the game.
"We had a couple opportunities to make plays but just didn't quite get it done," Warehime said. "Then we were forced to take some chances in the second half and go away from what we normally do."
